After a 45-year hiatus, a new WI group has launched in the village of Sherington – thanks to the enthusiasm of new resident Jo Wareham.
The original WI in Sherington was formed in 1919 and ran successfully until closing in 1975. Now the group is back as The Sherington Belles, with 40 members signing up on the launch night in January.
‘When I moved to the village in August last year, I wanted to create a group where ladies of all ages could come and feel safe, be supported in all areas of their life and make new friends whilst learning new skills and laughing lots,’ says Jo, who has taken on the role of President. ‘The turnout for the launch was staggering and I’m already planning lots of exciting events, including some where the whole family can join in.’
Jo is no stranger to planning events and fund raising. She co-founded The Ladybyrds Emporium, which holds regular events to raise money for local dementia communities in Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. Her company, The Little Branding Company Ltd, has also organised charity events for Chums Charity and has supported the Community Awards in Luton.
At the first official WI meeting on 4th February, members will get a taste of Lindy Hop courtesy of Swing Dance MK. ‘Put on some flat shoes and come along for a really fun night,’ says Jo. ‘We start at 7.30pm and there will be plenty of tea and cake after dancing.’
*The Sherington Belles meet on the first Tuesday of the month in the village hall, from 7.30pm until 9.30pm. Annual membership costs £43. For details or to arrange a visit, call Jo on 07852 951425
